School Groups

One of the most powerful ways to educate is to interact, and there is nowhere as interactive as the Australian Shark and Ray Centre, shark feeding excursion. A school excursion to Port Stephens is a must do school activity. After sitting down and talking about a range of issues facing marine life and/or specific educational content requested by the teachers, we kit the kids up and take them in for the shark feeding and ray patting. This school activity is sensational once they are in the tank they will be shown how to respond to the animals. And for the grand finale they will have the thrill of their lives and hand feed the huge rays and feed a tank full of sharks in the shark feeding!!

Risk assessments are available.

There is no age limit as to who can walk, swim or just watch our shark feeding. If you can walk down three stairs you can go in with them. This is a must do for seniors groups, as they would never have partaken in an activity like this before. We have plenty of waterproof waders so the groups can get in the water without even getting wet for the shark feeding.

There are two options for seniors tours.

1. Talk with shark and ray feeding demonstrations:
   For those less mobile or who just don’t want to go in, we have a talk about our facility whilst they sip on the complimentary tea or coffee (complete with biccies). We then take them around the site for a discussion, and then one of our guides will jump in the water and show how we conduct our shark feeding. We will even get big ‘Fred’ the giant black ray, to leap out of the water and show off as he does.

2. Shark and Ray Feeding:
   We do all of the above, except those participants who want to, get dressed up in some waders and come into the water with us to hand feed these amazing critters.
